Coop's clothing factory in Dorning Street was founded by a local tailor, Timothy Coop, who in 1872 had the idea of training girls to use sewing machines for mass production.

In 1994 Coops was redeveloped into flats and offices, and Coops Foyer was established by Grosvenor Housing Association.
